Supporting the student transition to university

How can we better support students as they transition to university life?

My role

Lead Consultant

As the project lead, I identified and scoped the work, planning and running workshops with students, acting as the key client manager.

Core team members included my inputs as a UX researcher and designer, a graphic designer, developer and client-side project manager.

The client

Monash University in Melbourne Australia was focused on improving its student and employee experience. This work became one project of many that covered first-year students, international and graduate students as well as potential and new employees.

The work

As a part of a wider digital strategy and web refresh, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia wanted to improve its digital support of students and faculty. To do this, they needed to better understand the new student experience and their digital needs as they transitioned to university life.

Carefully constructed activities with the students allowed for honest communication and collaborative problem solving. Students co-created digital solutions based on their questions, frustrations and needs.

This work inspired and informed an updated digital user experience with new content and additional external services were developed for first year students.

The results

  • Improved student retention
  • Inspired future student involvement in marketing and experience design initiatives
  • Work was repeated for job seekers, graduate students and academics to inform multiple digital tools and websites created by the university
